Top Tips for Finding Student Accommodation

ET
Emily Tran15 January 2026

Whether you're heading to university for the first time or looking for a house share, finding the right student accommodation takes planning.

Start Early#

The best properties get snapped up fast. Start looking in November or December for the following academic year. Don't rush into a decision, but don't wait until April either.

Choose Your Housemates Wisely#

Living with friends sounds great, but make sure you're compatible as housemates. Discuss expectations around noise, cleaning, and bills before committing.

Location Matters#

Think about:

  • Distance to campus — can you walk or will you need a bus?
  • Nearby shops and amenities — supermarkets, GP surgeries, launderettes
  • Safety — check the area, especially if you'll be walking home late

Know Your Rights#

As a student tenant, you have the same legal protections as any other renter. Your deposit must be protected, your landlord must provide a safe property, and they must give proper notice before entering.

Bills: Inclusive or Separate?#

Some student properties include bills in the rent. This makes budgeting easier but can be more expensive overall. Compare both options before deciding.

Happy house hunting!
